THE DARK SIDE OF THE NIGHT

THE DARK SIDE OF NIGHT

ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM FOR THE TENTH EDITION OF THE NIGHT PLOVDIV 2014

Within the tenth Night of Museums and Galleries – Plovdiv,  Open Arts Foundation initiates a special anniversary program. The Dark Side of the Night is based on an itinerary from the Alternative Map of Plovdiv, the curatorial concept is made by Art Affairs & Documents Foundation.

Dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Plovdiv Night of Museums and Galleries, the project gathers internationally acclaimed artists, craftsmen, musicians and the public in an imaginative, unbiased, courageous and indefatigable search of the dark side of the night, the Night, art and the city.

The selected works offer an experience beyond the eye-catching, spectacular and easy to explain. They challenge the public to re-think its role as viewer, and its expectations of art.

The Dark Side of the Night is a journey – through Plovdiv, through the experience of the works and the tenacity of the viewer to concentrate precisely at midnight. A poetic-mystical-social-historical itinerary that requires no less and no more than all of the soul’s resources.

Curated by the Art Affairs and Documents Foundation

The Dark Side of the Night is a leap of faith in the unknown with the hope that there is a black cat to be found in the dark. Art is a medium of communication with the powers of the Night. The works on display search for meaning beyond that which is rational, politically correct, topical or easy to explain, challenging the public’s ability to keep a sharp eye and mind throughout the Night.

The Dark Side is not only an alternative of the Night, but also of the city of Plovdiv. It draws a new map, away from the usual axis of movement during the Night. It strays from the well-trodden path to bring enlightenment about the meaning of the Night, a moment when art is at its closest to the public.

Situated in six locations from the Alternative Map of Plovdiv, the project is a shadow of the Night, in which no maps, directions or indexes can show the way. Its poetical-mystical-social-historical itinerary demands no more and nor less than all the resources of the soul.

ART AFFAIRS AND DOCUMENTS FOUNDATION

The Art Affairs and Documents Foundation, the first and only professional association of curators in Bulgaria, was established in 2008 with an aim to present and promote contemporary art. Its portfolio includes independent projects by its founding members, as well as collaborative projects, such as “In 15 minutes everyone will be in the future” for the Week of Contemporary Art in Plovdiv, “In Search of Wasted Time”, “The Chalga Temptation”, and others.
