Dzhadzha

Dzhadzha is a collaboration between Open Arts Foundation, gallery Gallery, and Sariev gallery, in which we explore how contemporary electronic and digital art is created, sold, collected and preserved.

Dzhadzha is a collaboration between Open Arts Foundation, gallery Gallery, and Sariev gallery, in which we explore how contemporary electronic and digital art is created, sold, collected and preserved.

Through discussions, events, publications and exhibitions, we will explore these topics with artists, curators, collectors and, of course, the general audience. We will talk about contemporary developments in interactive digital art, net art and NFTs, in Bulgaria and abroad.

We will look at established best practices and local context, to try to understand how galleries, private collectors and institutions can better serve digitally-native art today and in the future.

Dzhadzha starts in June 2021.

Collecting digital art, net art and NFTs

19 June 2021
A conversation between Veselina Sarieva and Rene Beekman

The recent craze around art sold as NFTs has brought new attention to selling, buying and owning digital art. What is an NFT and what is it not? Do we really need NFTs to buy or sell digital art? Can I sell non-digital art or physical objects using NFTs? How is buying, selling or owning digital art different from traditional art? Is there anything special I should do as an artist or curator when buying or selling digital art? What does it mean to own net art?

These and other questions will be the topic of a conversation between Vesselina Sarieva, owner and curator at the successful commercial art gallery Sariev, and Rene Beekman, co-owner of gallery Gallery, the only gallery in Bulgaria that specializes in digital art.

Submit your questions in advance using this form and they will be answered during the conversation.

The event is a part of the Dzhadzha platform.

BGxBG медийна храна

An exhibition by Dirk Paesmans
16 July – 30 August 2021
Location: 40 Otets Paisii St., Plovdiv

BGx.BG медийна храна by Dirk Paesmans can only be seen on the router of gallery Gallery at 40 Otets Paisii St. in Plovdiv (Bulgaria).

After the very successful show in Sofia, BGx.BG медийна храна by the net art pioneer Dirk Paesmans will be presented in Plovdiv as part of the DZHADZHA programme.

BGx.BG медийна храна is a nostalgic work. In many ways, it is about the internet as it was intended.

In the early days of the internet, only a few generic top-level domains such as .com, .net, and .org existed. The internet was a place of promise, a place where anyone could meet everyone, where your contacts were not “friends nearby” but rather, people with shared interests, far away.

Using the internet was about exploring, making exciting new contacts and learning about new cultures, new languages, new vantage points.

Then, in the mid-1980s, country code top-level domains (ccTLD) were created, and with it, as Dirk Paesmans says, “it was as if the real world entered the internet”.

Years later, in response, Paesmans and Joan Heemskerk, known as artist collective JODI, created the Wrongbrowser, a series of web browsers, which stubbornly loaded web pages each from a single, different country code top-level domain. One browser only loaded Korean web pages, while another would load only pages from German domains.

BGx.BG медийна храна is part of a series of new works by Paesmans, where each work is dedicated to one country or region, or juxtaposes two different countries. In this series, Paesmans attempts to re-find this original approach of discovery to the internet.

In BGx.BG медийна храна, Paesmans combines elements from Bulgarian online supermarkets and electronics retailers, juxtaposing what have become basic necessities of life. Paesmans’ exploration of these sites weaves together the visual and typographical language of Bulgarian websites, with their underlying technological structure.

BGx.BG медийна храна also includes a layer of text, ranging from an endless series of advertisement tracking tags and cookies to fragments from a 2018 article in a Bulgarian business publication about IBM’s Project Debater, in which, in the reading of the publication, an AI squares off against, and almost beats, human debaters. BGx.BG медийна храна was created specifically for the exhibition at gallery Gallery.

Dirk Paesmans is an artist who lives and works in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. He studied under Nam June Paik at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf before attending CADRE, the electronic arts laboratory at San Jose State University in California. Dirk started his career as a video artist, and has worked since 1995 with Joan Heemskerk as the artist collective JODI, known for their pioneering net-based artworks.
