The annual report presents the activities and programmes of Open Arts Foundation in 2021
Manifesto of Happiness, 2021 by ULTRAFUTURO was published in December 2021 by Open Arts Foundation as a part of the last Phase VI of the multigenre visual art situation Future Unforgettable, curated by Vesselina Sarieva.
In 2021, the curator of the sixth season of FLUCA was the young visual artist, who also practices as an independent curator Valko Chobanov. His vision for the season was for Fluca to become a place for artistic collaboration, where artists feel free to share their independent views. In the coziness of the street and involving the invited artists foremost, the curatorial program tackles a discussion over aesthetics, kitsch, nature, design, pop culture and the confluence of pleasures.
The event Collectors’ Forum, lecture and discussion with Peruvian collector Carlos Marsano, in the frame of Future Unforgettable Phase VI, will open up a different perspective on art collecting as a process of interconnecting different types of logic and ensuring an artwork’s continuity.
In its final sixth stage, the project Future Unforgettable will converge a series of artistic actions intended to function as antitheses and conclusions of the five stages realized so far that were largely investigative and documentary in nature.
In November 2021, the project Future Unforgettable shifts from the focus on local topics in its previous three phases dedicated to the processes of elaborating historical trajectories, mapping of current artistic locations and determining specific features and typologies of Bulgarian contemporary art. Merging together through a series of actions its phases IV and V under the title “Together Again”, Future Unforgettable becomes a direct reflection of the time we live in by raising topical questions about the artistic environment on a global scale.
In its previous phases, the art project FUTURE UNFORGETTABLE identified and dealt with topics such as political opposition, institutional deficiencies, individualism, the body as instrument and political entity, the fragility of borders (Phase I), along with topics concerned with researching the local artistic ecosystems, the formation of informal collectives, the transmission of knowledge and memory, the practices of dialogizing, the manifestations outside the “center” (Phase II). In its third phase, FUTURE UNFORGETTABLE will bring out through its own focus and analysis specific features of Bulgarian contemporary art.
The exhibition “Paved Paradise” by Austrian artist and cocktail enthusiast Gabriele Edlbauer is highlighting the cracks in the façade of Tiki and asking questions that the movement would much rather have swept under a colorfully woven straw rug.
Attention is brought to all topics, experiences and practices from the first decade of the 21st century to date, covering a number of areas in their Bulgarian context, such as the city, local ecosystems, artistic communities, informal environments, knowledge transfer, art audiences, cultural policies, interactions, continuity, memory, dialogue. This phase is expressly interested in the immediate communication, encounters and cohesion within artistic communities, and also in practices outside the "center" some of which follow the grassroots model.
